Parental and Community Involvement in Schools

(From Neighborhood Leader, Fall 2006 issue)

Those of us in Cleveland who want to promote meaningful parental and community involvement in schools can learn from the experiences of successful groups from around the country.

The Center for Community Change in Washington, D.C. has a long history of community organizing in low-income communities around several issues, including education.

The Boston Parent Organizing Network (BPON) is a citywide network of organizations devoted to supporting parents in their efforts to improve Boston Public Schools. BPON’s executive director, Caprice Taylor Mendez, gave an excellent presentation at our recent education conference.

Leezest George and Vanessa Evans of Chicago’s Logan Square Neighborhood Association (LSNA) also gave inspiring talks at the conference. They highlighted LSNA’s Parent Mentor Program.
